Overview
A Private Guided Tour to the Capital of Epirus
There are destinations that are rarely offered to tourists — and quite unfairly so.
Ioannina is one of them. Perhaps it seems remote at first glance, but in reality, getting here takes no more time than the journey to Meteora. And the impressions are no less — sometimes even greater.
I invite you on a journey to the capital of Epirus — an ancient city with centuries of history, located at an altitude of about 480 meters. Ioannina is known for its feta cheese, Zagori mineral water, and its unique atmosphere, where Byzantine heritage, the Ottoman era, and Greek culture intertwine.
But most importantly — this is where the legendary Ali Pasha of Ioannina lived, known as “Arslan” — the Lion, whom Europe once called the “Muslim Napoleon.” His dramatic and controversial life, as well as his tragic execution, deeply impressed the minds of the 19th century and found reflection in European literature.
Our introduction to the city begins at the large and remarkably beautiful Lake Pamvotida. We will stroll along the waterfront, see the historic bastion walls, walk to the pier — and from there take a small boat for just a few minutes to reach the island located in the very center of the lake. On the island, we will visit the museum and the monastery-house where Ali Pasha was killed. It is a powerful place — here, history feels especially close.
Returning to the mainland, we will continue our walk through the picturesque streets of the castle district and admire the old, charming houses. They still preserve traces of the Byzantine past and remind us of the rich and complex history of this region. We will see the Aslan Pasha Mosque, the castle structures, and, if desired, visit a small archaeological museum. We will also visit the famous Fethiye Mosque — the burial place of Ali Pasha.
Ioannina is also renowned for its silversmiths. Here, artisans create everything from tableware and lighting fixtures to church utensils and exquisite jewelry. In the old town, you can taste Eastern sweets, local cheeses, aromatic coffee, and other traditional products — a warm and delicious way to conclude the walk
A tour to Ioannina combines beautifully with other routes — Meteora, Zagorohoria, Corfu, Lefkada, or Parga. In such combinations, the journey unfolds even more deeply and becomes truly enriching.
If you wish to discover a less touristy, more profound and authentic Greece — I would be delighted to show you Ioannina just that way.
