Overview
There are daytime Meteora — with panoramic views and photographs.
And there are Meteora at sunrise.
This journey is special.
We travel not simply to visit monasteries, but to participate in the morning Divine Liturgy in an active monastery.
The service begins at 5 a.m. and lasts about three hours — in silence, among the rocks, as the first light of dawn appears.
After the service, the monks offer us hot coffee.
You may ask questions, seek advice, and receive a blessing.
This is not a tourist visit.
It is a prayerful presence.
Both men and women may attend the service.
The trip is not intended for children — the monastery is closed, and the atmosphere requires inner focus and quiet reflection.
Night departure
We depart around 1 a.m.
The journey from Thessaloniki takes about three hours with one stop.
Along the way you may rest for a while.
On the return journey you will see magnificent landscapes: Mount Olympus, the Tempi Valley, the Thessalian plain, and the city of Larissa.
If desired, we may also visit the church of Saint Paraskevi.
After the liturgy
After the service we will visit another monastery and an icon-painting workshop.
You will see how icons are created, and if you wish you may try applying gold leaf or order an icon.
We will make several photo stops, descend the mountain road through Kastraki to Kalambaka, and if desired stop for lunch at a traditional taverna.
Meteora is a place where you feel the meeting of earth and sky.
But during the sunrise liturgy this feeling becomes especially powerful.
There are sunrises that you see with your eyes.
And there are those that remain in the heart.
